In an attempt to dislodge protesters from barricading the Uwheru/Bomadi expressway, one person was allegedly shot by security agencies detached to disperse youths and women and many other sustained injuries at Agadama-Uwheru community, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State .
It would be recalled that a fish farmer simply identified as Genesis was few days shot dead by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the area and as I am talking with you now, the corpse of the deceased is getting to be retrieved from where he was killed in the bush.
Road users travelling to other neighboring communities and Bomadi local government area were left stranded for several hours as protesters from the affected community barricades the road to draw the attention of the federal and state government to their plight.
Accusing security agencies of being biased in handling the situation, residence of the community who gave his name as John said, “A white Hilux of army is always protecting the Fulani herdsmen whenever they strike and as at now we are yet to recover the body of Mr. Genesis.
“We are having no weapon to fight but our only weapon is to block the road to draw the attention of the government to our conditions.
According to him, “When the army came, they started shotting and that process they shot one of our brother Vincent Jonathan on the leg while trying to force the road open as many other scampering for safety got injured in that process.
The protesters who laid siege on the road as early as 4a.m, claimed to have sighted a group of over 100 herdsmen trooping into their community at about 2a.m on Monday and sorted the intervention of the army stationed at Bomadi.
However, when the troops arrived the community at about 4:30a.m, the protesters had already barricaded the road accusing the army of aiding the herdsmen in their atrocities.
Another source at the community said a crisis ensued between the protesters and the soldiers who tried to “forcefully” pass the barricade erected by the youths with their hilux van which was resisted by the youths.
“That led to the shooting of one of the youths identified as Vincent Jonathan on the leg who is receiving treatment at Ughelli Central hospital.”
The arrival of Ughelli North council chairman, Godwin Adode and the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ughelli ‘A’ Division, Onyeke Ezekiel who rushed the shot victim to the Ughelli Central hospital for medical attention could not douse the tension.
However, the arrival of the Pere of Kiribiri-Mein kingdom, HRM, G.T. Oporomoh in Bomadi local who spoke and pleaded with the aggrieved protesters soften their hearts and the road was finally opened at 12:44pm.
